Secure Your iPhone for Travel

Don't Risk Your iPhone and iPad When You Travel

Backup Your iPhone and Secure Your Wi-Fi

Summertime means more travel and photography than most other times of year. We have come to expect our iPhones will be with us constantly, allowing us to take virtually unlimited photos and videos. That's why it's more critical than ever to make sure you're protecting your iPhone from loss or damage. You don't want to be the one who's 12-year-old leaves the iPhone at the Vista Point, loosing all of your vacation memories (and your personal data).

Don't assume your iPhone is backing up your photos and videos! Taking a few minutes to double-check your settings can save you days of hassle and upset.

Even if you *know* you have iCloud backup turned on, you still have to follow these steps for the backup to take place:

  • Connect your device to a power source.
  • Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network.
  • Make sure that your device's screen is locked.
  • Have enough available space in iCloud for the backup.

Review Apple's instructions for backing up: [https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977]

If you skip even one of those steps, for example not connecting to your hotel's Wi-Fi network, then the photos and videos (and your other data) is NOT being backed up, and you won't be able to recover that information if your phone is lost or damaged.

If you're using Photo Stream (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201317), photos are only uploaded to your iCloud account when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi, so that's another instance where you want to be sure to connect to hotel Wi-Fi.

To make sure ALL of your Wi-Fi use is secure regardless of where you connect, use Cloak (https://www.getcloak.com) or Tunnel Bear (https://www.tunnelbear.com). These apps ensure that your internet activity is private and secure even when using public Wi-Fi, and their minimal cost is well worth the protection they provide.
